HittingHitting the baseball is one of the hardest things to do in any sport. Below are the most common mistakes in hitting and some tips and techniques that will help your player.
7 Common Mistakes That Hitters Make: 1) Stepping Out 2) Taking their eye off the baseball 3) Loop the bat under the ball at contact 4) Cast the bat “around the ball” 5) Little to no hip turn 6) Cutting off follow through or extension 7) Driving into the plate |
Improvement in each of these areas can be made by following the Pyramid of Skill Acquisition.
The foundation of a greater hitter is balance. When a hitter is struggling with balance then many of the other aspects of their swing will be out of sorts. Coaches tend to make mistakes by trying to fix symptoms rather than discovering the root cause and correcting it. At Baseballsmith we focus on determining the root of the problem and systematically correcting the mechanics causing the problem swing. For example, if a hitter is pulling their front shoulder off the ball while swinging his/her coach may tell them to “stay on the ball and keep their head in.” Sure, this is what we want to happen however at Baseballsmith we discover “why is the front shoulder pulling off in the first place?” By using the Pyramid of Skill Acquisition and starting with the most basic and foundational parts of the swing, Coach Smith checks to see if the batter is maintaining their balance. From there, he works his way up the pyramid to diagnose the swing and implement drills that will make the necessary corrections to the mechanics insuring that batters will learn how to autocorrect when in a game. |
